August Adolescents

Those wonderful juvenile great blue herons are migrating west to the Hudson River. I felt bad for this skinny youngster at Oglevie’s Pond that couldn’t seem to catch a fish. If only I could get it into my backyard I would stock my hot tub. Fingers crossed that at least half of the new bird…

Sum(mer) Fun

My favorite totem, the great white egret, entertained me. The purple martins are seriously thinking about a new home. Local, ordinary birds were just doing their thing. And butterflies flitted.

Awesome Autumn
I love this time of year. The colors of the leaves and birds are especially glorious.

I could have just put the camera out on my tripod all day, sat in one place and taken pictures of what was in the yard.

Earth Day 2014
Six years ago I had a detached retina in three places. It took six months to heal. I was on my side for three of those six months. I am so happy to be able to photograph my local birds. Happy Earth Day!

Perfect End to Project FeederWatch

Croton Point Park never gets tiring. Project FeederWatch at Croton Nature Center is always entertaining. One more day to go, but I had to put these up today. The birds just sit close now as they wait for me to fill the feeders.

Some Days Things Just Work

My first year eagle guy now has to wait for his sibling. Finally got the early bird, but not with a worm. Those darn flying tree sparrows…

Snowbound
Large numbers of eagles remain on the Lower Hudson River. My view this week was from a distance, except for first grade eagle watching on Tuesday. Also, please take part in the Great Backyard Bird Count. You can go to a nearby park that has a feeder and just count for 15 minutes.

Everything But the Wheatear
All the serious birders on the east coast were at the Croton Train Station Boat Ramp a few weeks ago getting a look at the very rare wheatear. I saw mention of it, but never took the five minute trip to see it. I did manage to photograph my usual subjects.
