Coots Ice Skating at Croton
I laughed and laughed as these two tried to make it out of a frozen area into open water. I felt bad about that. They did join a group of ruddy ducks in a more open area.

Eagles Galore! Plus a Few Other Regulars
As soon as the crushing ice formed on the Hudson River and the rivers to the north, east, west and south, our migrant eagles joined us at the Croton Point Nature Center. Eagle watchers reported up to 44 eagles on the river.

The osprey are fledging. The ducklings are swimming. The black-crowned night heron parent is preening. The gulls are watching.

One good tern deserves another ….
Jamaica Bay rules. Can’t seem to stay away for very long. The terns were stomping up a storm in the surf. What makes them do that? Are they raising the crabs?

The Eagles Are Back
I had the lovely vision of seven eagles soaring above me at the Croton Point Park Nature Center. What a great way to start the new year, albeit a little bit early. Along with the eagles, the usual birds were there.

Everything But the Wheatear
All the serious birders on the east coast were at the Croton Train Station Boat Ramp a few weeks ago getting a look at the very rare wheatear. I saw mention of it, but never took the five minute trip to see it. I did manage to photograph my usual subjects.
